In this task a child is confronted with a mirror for some time. At some point, the mother applies some rouge into the face of the child without the child noticing it – e.g. weeping the nose or face. The spot is applied so that the child also cannot see it through peripheral vision. A child is considered as recognizing himself or herself if he or she touches the spot or otherwise clearly communicates that he or she notices the difference. This girl clearly recognizes herself.
